#393- Havana 59

My baby’s got a nice laugh.

So, hey, a happy comic! Cool, yeah? I’m trying to work my way out of my sad sackery, my funk is not fun to make comics about, even less fun to read I am sure, and less fun still to live out. Making this comic made me happy, I need to do more challenging but fun comic stuff, it keeps me feeling motivated and not all completely worthless and a bum.

Anyway, if you live in the Richmond area, I very strongly recommend that you go to Havana 59, for the awesome mojitos and ambience, if nothing else. As you might surmise from the name, it’s themed after just pre-revolution Cuba, those glorious halcyon days of great drinks, relaxing times, exploitive sugarcane labor, and mafia-run casinos! (Thanks, Mr. Savino’s 20th century class back in high school!) Setting aside my obnoxious liberal arts pooh-pooh-ing for a sec, the decor is amazing, really transporting you in time with all the ceiling fans, intentionally worn-down plaster, exposed bricks, damaged shutters, etc. It’s the exact maximum amount a place can decorate itself to maximize ambience before taking a rapid dive into “themed restaurant in an amusement park.”

K, more comics on Friday! I think it’ll be the start of another large, two-part series, like with the Inkcident.

This comic is awesome!! You did such an amazing job depicting the space!!! I like the under-table-hand-holdin action :)

That glass may be one of my fav panels in the whole archive, artistically speaking

  4. BenBen Says:

Wow, thanks man, I really appreciate it! Brittney likes it too, she keeps telling me I should “draw drinks for a living,” which I’m really pretty sure is not a job.

i don’t know, maybe you could get contracts with trendy little bars all over that just have drink menus consisting of illustrations

  6. BenBen Says:

Ha, maybe. That would be quite an interesting job.

That place was balla. Quite possibly my favorite bar of all time (sorry, Happy Endings).

  8. BenBen Says:

Yeah, it is nice as hellllll. Still though, Happy Endings def holds the “favorite bar” spot in my heart, even if they did get rid of $2 pitchers recently. You can’t go home again…
